‘Love Lambton’ to fund park asset

A MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTERS OF THE ‘LOVE LAMBTON 150 YEAR CELEBRATIONS’ from Committee Chair, Cr Andrea Rufo.

“I’m sure you will agree that 2021 has been a very challenging year. Our community it would appear still has many challenges ahead.

To that end, this is to inform you that due to the unprecedented and constantly changing environment as we all live with COVID-19 and after careful consideration, the organising committee made the decision to cancel the Sunday 27th June celebration in Lambton Park.

This would have capped off wonderfully what had already been a fantastic week of events to mark Lambton’s 150th anniversary. It’s no exaggeration to say that everything up until and including Saturday 26th June went off perfectly. We could not have asked for better support and involvement from the community.

All aspects of the week starting with the media launch on the Monday 21st through to the Elder Street Sale Day on the Saturday, the wonderful walking history tours hosted by Newcastle Theatre Company and the marvellous Love Lambton Lunch at Lizotte’s left us more than satisfied with how things unfolded.

We considered rescheduling the Community Day event to a later date but given the ongoing concerns around the pandemic and with the safety of our community at the forefront of our thinking we have decided that a future Sunday event which may also be cancelled through factors outside our control is not the best use of the remaining funds.

The committee has met a number of times since June and discussed what we might be able to fund as a lasting asset to commemorate Lambton’s 150 years that could be placed in Lambton Park for the community to enjoy for years to come.We will of course report to your readers and the community on progress with this final project.

When the time comes to open and dedicate this asset we will hold a suitable event and invite the community to again celebrate why Lambton is such a great suburb.

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank all the creative partners, sponsors, supporters, contributors and committee members who made the Love Lambton 150 Years celebrations, at least as far as they got, such a wonderful success”.

Yours faithfully
