Local bus driving legend retires

If you have caught buses in and around Newcastle over the last four decades there’s a good chance Darrell Lock was your driver at some point. And if your driver wasn’t Darrell, he probably trained them.

After 41 years as both a bus driver and a driver trainer, Darrell, of Birmingham Gardens, retired last month.

When asked what he would miss about the job Darrell told The Local  “Well I can tell you what it won’t be. And that’s getting up at 4.30 every morning.”

“I’ve made many great friends at the depot over the years. And I’ll miss them. But we’ve always had a strong social network, so I’m sure we’ll stay in touch.” He added

Darrell’s mum, Pat McMahon of Lambton, was on the very first bus he drove in the early 1980s. She thought she would again show her support and made sure she was on the last bus he drove on Thursday 17 November.

The community thanks you for your dedication and service Darrell.
